There are many myths about poverty. Here are a few:

Myth:
“If people would just budget their money better, and not buy 
stuff they don’t need, they would have enough money.”

Facts:
Families in the lowest income bracket are living on an average 
income of $16,100*
 per year.

Families on social assistance spend at least 60 per cent of 
their income on non-subsidized housing
 and utilities, twice the 
amount for shelter recommended by the Canada Mortgage and 
Housing Corporation.

This leaves very little for other basics such as food, clothing, transportation and personal care items.
